Early Spring #Giveaway!

I am so excited for our current weather. Tell me about 70 degrees in February?! Awesome. I prefer cold weather, but I have a soft spot for Spring because it is when I start planning what's going to go into my garden. I even started some seeds already, sown directly in the soil outside.

For those of you that are not experts, like me, here are some links that I use to find information about plants, how to plant them and where to plant them. It is really important to have a good soil for your plants. Have you ever heard about the phrase "you are what you eat"? It also applies to plants. They feed from the soil and if they have a bad soil, well, their crops are not going to be the best.

One of my favorite websites to buy seeds, read information about different types of plants and varieties, is SeedsNow. Their website is really easy to navigate, they have tons of seeds (flowers, sprouts, veggies and herbs) and they do weekly giveaways too! But the best thing about them are the $0.99 sampler packs. They are sample packets with more than enough seeds in each baggie for a home gardener. I don't have a big yard so I am always fine with no more than 10 seeds per plant and these packs are more than enough, I even giveaway some seeds to friends because they are too many for me. They have an amazing germination rate too, so you don't have to worry.

The other websites I visit a lot too are Mother Earth News for companion planting; to know what to plant next to what and what not… and Small Blue Printer for their free online garden planner (which is super fun to use). As you may see below I have fun drawing my backyard, and after everything is in place what I have left to do is to plan what fruit/veggie goes in which bed.

Right now we have a total of 7 garden beds. We have plans to sow seeds for: tomatoes (6 varieties), bell peppers (2 varieties), carrots, onions (3 varieties), bush beans, small sugar pumpkin, spaghetti squash, cilantro, mint, thyme, oregano, marjoram, basil, nasturtiums and wildflower mix for the bees. We already have strawberries and raspberries from last year, and I am planning on having a dwarf lemon tree soon.

Kiddo loves to help me in the garden. He has his own tools that we got from the awesome folks of Roca Home and he is learning a lot. He really enjoys it, you can check him out on Instagram (@mikes_homegarden).

I encourage all of you to try gardening at least once. Even if it is only one plant. I am sure your kids and you will love it and that will also teach kids to respect and love nature, since there is where our food comes from.

  1. I really want to start gardening with my toddler - maybe it will make her want to eat the vegetables she grows!

  2. I would like to win prize 1 as those are better suited for the zone I am in.

  3. I would love to win prize #1...our little one loves to eat the Cherry tomatoes right off the plant! I have never tried the Okra before..would be so fun! We love our small garden! We did one the last two years...and our little one loves to help all summer and eats almost all the veggies right off the plants! He just loves it!

  4. Both prizes have things I like, so I’d be excited for either. My favorite is #1 since my hubby loves cherry tomatoes.
